Who was the first wrestler to win the AWA World Heavyweight Championship in an actual match?

Answer:

Gene Kiniski.  Pat O’Connor was awarded the title when he left the NWA.  Since he did not defend the belt it was awarded to Verne Gagne, who then lost the match to Kiniski.
